Books I Recommend

You want to know my fave grammar and writing books? What a coincidence:

I have a list right here!

1.) “The AP Stylebook” O.K., this isn’t really a favorite, just a necessity.

2.) “Eats, Shoots and Leaves” by Lynne Trusse. This book manages to make punctuation funny. Imagine that. No, really, try to imagine that. Can’t? Then buy the book.

3.) “The Elements of Style” by William Strunk and E.B. White. Yes, E.B. White is the author of “Charlotte’s Web,” and no, this book has no talking pigs and spiders.

4.) “The Chicago Manual of Style” See the bit about the AP style guide.

5.) “55 Successful Harvard Law School Application Essays” This book is a fantastic way to see overachievers’ writing picked apart by other overachievers.

6.) “Student’s Book of College English: Rhetoric, Reader, Research Guide and Handbook” I taught this book for a few semesters at a community college. It has some great essays in it, including George Orwell’s “The Hanging.”
