Now here’s one you don’t hear often–or do you? First off, the meaning:
If there’s ever a word you wouldn’t associate with its meaning, it’s the adjective “bellicose,” which sounds an awful lot like “Bela Lugosi” (Am I right?).
If you’ve seen the movie Ex Machina, this term will make a lot more sense to you (can Oscar Isaac dance, or what?!). Of course, it will probably also make sense to you if you took a lot of English lit classes in college. It’s one of those adopted words, like “denouement,” that requires above-average pronunciation skills to avoid humiliation or befuddled looks.
This little gem has been around since 1935, but, had it not been for Dan Savage and his “Savage Love” column, I don’t think I ever would have known it existed.
